The highly-anticipated transition to Assetto Corsa Competizione united Romanian sim racers in a 2-hour race around Suzuka with over 30 cars present on the Racing League Romania grid. AQIRYS Racing made its debut as an official team with Victor Nicolae and Alex Cascatău finishing second overall in car number 12.
Nicolae qualified the car in 3rd place overall and although managed to get a very good start, he got boxed in behind the pole-sitter and couldn't take advantage in the first part of the race. A position was then gained at the mid-race pit stops as the outfit moved from 3rd to 2nd. And although the gap to the leaders had been halved at the beginning of Alex's stint, the pace ultimately dropped off and victory was soon out of reach.
The newly-introduced "racing driver" category is aimed at real-life racers who have had a recent circuit racing license and features some of the best known Romanian drivers. Alex Cascatău managed to seal victory in the category, but hopes to challenge for overall wins as well.
The other car of the WCR stable premiered the Textar eSports banner with a solid outing. Locked in a five-way battle, they prevailed elbows out, gaining four places from their grid position. Mihai Rusu and Cezar Toader crossed the line in fourth place, having slashed more than 10 seconds from the deficit to P3 in the second hour of the race.
All in all, the first race of the season proved that the predefined expectations of the club are well calibrated with the depth of the field: the AQIRYS car is a clear championship contender, while the Textar pair can realistically fight for third overall in a 10-round campaign. The next outing will take place on the 24th of January at the Nurburgring and will be a one-hour race.
